Fly RC Planes And Electric RC Helicopters Indoors And Outdoors Too. Or Try RC Cars
And RC Toys That Are
Fast And Fun.

Electric Ducted Fan Buyers Guide

Get with the jet set!        by Jason Carter

From park flyers and sport planes to 3D aerobatic ships and electric ducted fans, electrics have been rapidly proliferating in recent years.

The editors of Fly RC have prepared an Electric Ducted Fan Buyers Guide for the October 2007 issue of Fly RC. The Guide includes 28 leading electric ducted fan jets. Whether you fly at
the local park or the local RC club
field, this Guide will help
you get started in
this exciting
new category.

Find out about leading models available today that offer the ease of electric power combined with jet-like performance. Whether you’re looking for a casual flyer that you can pack away in your trunk for a quick flight during lunch or a 150 MPH fiberglass jet that can be flown at the field without the need for a turbine license, you’ll find it in the October 2007 issue of Fly RC, available in August on newsstands and at www.shop4rc.com. We are posting here an exploded view of a typical EDF power train and a few samples of the models presented in the upcoming buyer’s guide.

LYNX XF ARF

Wingspan: 25.5 in.; length: 30.25 in.; flying weight: 14 oz. Radio gear, motor, EDF unit and battery are required for completion. (Part No. HMP701) Price—$54.60

Electric Ducted Fan Basics
by Tom Atwood

Great Planes Hyperflow 370 EP Ducted Fan, sold with motor (Part No. LXLXA3), Price—$29.99. This unit comes with a 370BB brushed motor, and can be used with a 20mm or 24mm brushless inrunner motor. The unit includes additional stator vanes to straighten airflow for higher performance, brushless motors.

In recent years, advances in motors, batteries and EDF design have enabled electric jets to fly efficiently and fast.

Important factors for good performance include properly contoured rotors, a very small clearance between the rotor tips and the inside of the ducted fan housing, right-sized intake and outlet openings, and even the “lip shape” (contour of the intake perimeter) is important.

If the intake is too large, it can increase drag and decrease efficiency; the intake for the Great Planes HyperFlow fan, designed to fly efficiently at 56 mph, is 129% of the fan’s swept area.

A larger exhaust outlet will increase thrust and decrease airspeed—and vice versa.

The HyperFlow has an outlet area that is 99% of the fan’s swept area. A smooth duct profile with no obstructions can increase thrust by as much as 40%.

For details on the HyperFlow unit, search for part number LXLXA3 at www.towerhobbies.com, and be sure to check out the manual.
